Respecting Industry Boundaries: A Guide for Friends & Family

Writer: Mandisa A. Johnson, MS, MFAMandisa A. Johnson, MS, MFA

If you know a friend or family member who is an entertainment professional, here are a few tips on what NOT to do.

Before I dive into this post, here’s some backstory. Please note—this post is not directed at any one person. It is meant to educate those pursuing a career in film and television.

Often, friends or family members who know I work in entertainment reach out to me because they, or their child, are looking to break into the industry. Sometimes, they ask me to send them my contacts—which, of course, I don’t. Other times, I ask them to email me directly to set up a consultation, but many people don’t feel they should do that because they are personally connected to me.

Please understand: just because you are connected to an industry professional DOES NOT entitle you to their contacts! The entertainment industry is built on networking and forming your connections. You are not owed access to someone else’s network, nor is it appropriate to reach out to their contacts on social media without permission. It is unprofessional to message them out of the blue and then get upset with your friend or family member when they explain the correct way to approach things.

Three Tips

  1. If you have a friend or family member who is an entertainment professional and may cast for a project, follow the proper submission protocols like everyone else. Unless otherwise specified, do not submit via DM. Following directions is crucial in this industry—if you don’t, it reflects poorly on you.

  1. If you have their phone number, do not text or call without first asking if it’s a good time to chat. Also, do not contact them to ask for their connections. No one is obligated to share those with you.

  1. The best way to connect with industry professionals, casting directors, and others is through networking. This allows them to put a name to your face. Be sure to check out our posts on networking for more guidance.
