Are you looking to reach out to an industry professional but unsure how to proceed? In this post, I'll share some key dos and don'ts to help you make a successful connection.

Recently, someone contacted me on LinkedIn with a message saying that someone had told them to reach out to me. This initial message left me a bit puzzled, so I responded by asking what they were looking for—whether it was an interview or if they were a potential client. Unfortunately, they only repeated that someone had told them to reach out.

Let's clarify how not to approach someone in your professional field. First, always introduce yourself, even if your name is visible on your profile. It helps personalize your message and reminds the recipient of who you are.

Second, be clear about your profession and your reason for reaching out. This clarity helps the recipient understand your intent and ensures that you respect their time by making your request straightforward.

Pro tip: Always approach with the mindset that you are initiating the contact. This means maintaining professionalism and not implying that the recipient owes you a response. Reach out thoughtfully to make a positive impression.
